FLORIDA TRIALS ASSOCIATION NEWS
2003/2004 SEASON ISSUE #05 “Hardrock!” DECEMBER 14, 2003 NEWSLETTER EDITOR – LEE SILAS ********************************************************** IMPORTANT!!! The next event will be held at Hardrock not at Croom, I repeat the next event will be held at Hardrock not at Croom. EDITOR’S CORNER Have a great trials. OFFICER’S CORNER Thanksgiving I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and had plenty of Turkey to eat. Gobble Gobble. Round 3 We had a pretty good turnout for Round 3 of the FTA Championship Series, which took place at Hard Rock in Ocala, but we are hoping for a few more riders for the next event. Our apologies to the Sportsman class as it seemed to be a little tougher than we had planned, but I believe everyone still had a great time. A Big Attaboy to Chuck for riding the Champ lines, I know in my section he went to a D-Cup J-strap to do the Rock, which was all of 6 feet! The weather cooperated by turning cool on Sunday, so that made for great riding. Thanks to everyone who helped set up this event and especially for Tim and Karl for scouting the area ahead of time. Help Needed When Kim is not at an event, I could use some help with sign-up. It gets pretty hectic trying to take money, write receipts, write names on the Finish Report, and provide scorecards. So if you want something to occupy your time for a little while before the event starts, please let me know. I could also use some help with tallying the scorecards at the end of the event. And while we are on this subject, it is the rider’s responsibility to tally the number of rides and the scores before the scorecard is turned in, and then we will be happy to verify them for you. Round 3 Round 3 at Hardrock Motorcycle Park offered a nice change in environment for FTA riders. Hardrock has a complete different terrain, more elevation change, and a tough but fun loop. Barry Florin and the central fl. club put a lot of effort into clearing and laying out 8 new sections with a loop that everyone could get around. Poison ivy and bee's nests were a few obstacles encountered during set up. Three loops proved to be plenty for most riders and the weather cooperated for the whole day. Victor Larson was the only novice rider of the day but made a good ride with only 52 points. In intermediate Bob Vennel had low score of the day with only 7 dabs, Nathan Gamso came in a respectable 2nd on his new bike and new rider Brooks Duncan finished 3rd. Jerry Colson won sportsman on his trusty old gas gas with Lonnie Lykins taking second. "Studley Dudley" Cullum rounded out the top three on a sherco. Sportsman A class had Jack Hutson winning again - I think Jack is on his second year of being undefeated. Jim Berry found himself in 2nd place while testing out a new class and Tony Ham earned a respectable 3rd. Jeff Pigg came down from Gainsville to smoke the advanced class on his new gas gas. Carl Hall came out for his first event since last year finished a close 2nd while John Farish finished out the top 3 with only 43 points. Chris "Flyin Florin" topped Chuck Walker riding the champ lines while Marc Waller lead experts Doc Jenkins and Wayne Sholder. The December event should be just as exciting and maybe these Hardrock events will bring in some new riders. We have only used a small portion of the park so there is a lot of area yet to be explored. FTA Web Site Believe it or not, I have finally updated the FTA web site at http://fta2001.freeservers.com/. So please feel free to check it out when you have some spare time. We want to thank Lisa Teubert Vennel for helping us with this site. If you have any digital photos you would like to add to the site, please send them to me and we will see that they are inserted. Looking for Newsletter write-ups Don’t be bashful. If you have anything you want to add or brag about in the newsletter, trials-related or not, send it to us at cota66.cfl.rr.com. AMA/NATC Indoor National – Round 1 The Second Annual AMA National Championship Indoor Mototrial is scheduled for the 6 December 2003 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Chris will be leaving Wednesday, and of course, we want to wish him the best. As soon as we know when it will be aired, we will let you know. TrialsTV, who will also be filming, will eventually be offering a video for sale later, which normally runs about $25, if you are interested. You can visit the web site at http://www.trialstv.com/. We were honored to see that Ian used a picture of Chris on the cover of his latest video. STRA Gadsden Event Chris Florin, Tim Cone, the Davis’s, the Cullum’s, and the Larson’s headed up north for a nice change in the weather to ride the two-day modern event held in Gadsden, Alabama. Chris and David Chaves swapped places with each other – David taking the win on Saturday with Chris redeeming himself on Sunday in the Champ Class. Karl Davis rode the Expert Class, finishing with a 6th on Saturday but moving up to 5th on Sunday. Tim Cone only rode the Advanced class one-day, but he finished on the podium in 3rd place. Matthew rode against Tim in his class, doing quite well by finishing 5th on Saturday and 12th on Sunday. Dudley rode Sportsman, finishing 8th on Saturday and 11th on Sunday. I don’t know if this is a case of “like father, like son” or if they just stayed up too late the night before, but both of them dropped a few positions the following day. In Novice, Karl Davis, Jr. finished in 8th place, followed by Victor Larson in 9th. On Sunday, Victor moved to 8th place. In the Youth A lines, it was a clean sweep both days by Karl Davis, Jr. On Saturday, Karl had a clean ride, and on Sunday, he only dropped two points. That is some mighty fine, superb riding! It’s great to see some of our members traveling to out-of-state events. It’s especially nice if you are ready for a change of scenery; you want to ride some different terrain, or if you are just looking for the opportunity to meet new people. Great riding guys. There is a lot of training tips and plenty of good riding to keep you entertained. NEXT EVENT ROUND 4 Mark your calendars now. Round 4 will be held at Hard Rock in Ocala on 14 December 2003. Please note this is a change from the original schedule. The rider’s meeting will be at 10:45 with the event starting at 11:00. Don’t forget we will be collecting a gate fee of $10 from all riders and spectators. The only ones who do not have to pay are the observers, workers, and children twelve and under, so please come prepared. Also, remember to bring your AMA card, or your yellow slip, as it will be needed if you plan to ride. For those of you who need directions, take I-75 to old Exit 71 in Ocala (CR 326), go East about ¾ of a mile, cross over the railroad tracks, and then turn right at the stoplight.
